NTFS is certainly my choice for Windows XP installations. Your problem may actually be resolved by this course of action - if not, we may need to look at whether the hard drive actually at fault (in terms of the hardware).

Default [Fixed] Hard drive problem with WIN XP

There is a possibilty that the master boot record is corrupt on that old drive. You will need to repair it thru the Windows XP repair console

The partition switch worked perfectly. The computer is up and running. Putting all my old songs on it now.
