Default [Fixed] Win XP Logon Problem

I have a strange problem with WinXP Pro.

When I boot up everything seems fine until I get to the Logon screen.

I type in the correct password and the system starts with *loading your settings* but then it switches to logging out and returns to the logon screen.

This computer was working fine a couple of days ago, then it was moved and now won?t boot into WinXP.

I don?t have much experience with WinXP and I?m wondering if there is a problem with the authentication procedure since the young chap who owns the computer bought it second-hand from a charity shop.

Perhaps this is a pirate copy of WinXP and/or he hasn?t registered it with Microsoft.

Any help at all would be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

CDH

Default Re Moved??

By *Moved* I mean that the computer itself was physically moved from one side of the room to the other whilst the poor kid's mother cleaned his bedroom.

Of course I can't think of anything which could have caused WinXP to refuse to boot just by moving the computer, but as I have very little experience with WinXP it's something I have to consider. Maybe coincidence and maybe not.

Whatever it is, if I can eliminate this move as the cause of the problem then family relations can at least resume!

Default [Fixed] Win XP Logon Problem

Hi Mugalai and welcome to PC Help Forum!

First let's see if you can boot into Windows XP Safe Mode

Starting the Microsoft Windows XP Operating System in Safe Mode:

Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

If you are able to boot into safe mode, have a look at the devices list - right click "My Computer", properties, hardware tab, device manager. See if there is anything obvious in there and fix what you can. Re-boot and see what happens....let us know

Default [Fixed] Win XP Logon Problem

Hi Hengis & many thanks,

I'm unable to boot with safe mode.

It reaches the logon screen and I can't login as user or administrator.

It accepts the password and starts *loading your settings* but then it switches to logging out and returns to the logon screen.

At the moment I've booted with my Win XP CD to the recovery console and I'm at a command prompt:

C:\WINDOWS>

But I'm not sure where to go from here.

Any help?

Default [Fixed] Win XP Logon Problem

If you cannot log in as Admin (or equivalent) then, as this is probably due to profile corruption - - this is potentially bad.

If it were me, I would be tempted to re-build the XP installation from scratch...i.e: re-format the drive and re-build.

Have you tried loggin in as administrator with a password of admin ?
