Looks like I'll have to format and re-install

I believe that Win XP must be activated within a month of installation, is this true?

If so then this copy of Win XP can't be a pirate because it's been running fine for at least six months. UNLESS it was a cracked copy that Microsoft have finally detected and shut down. Can they do that?
Yes, it does need to be activated pretty quickly after install (30 days). If it was cracked then the only thing that could have thrown it out would be if you, or someone else has recently upgraded the service pack to SP1 and the "cracked" activation code that was originally used is on the M$ list.... I don't think M$ have the ability to "shut down" cracked versions of their software....yet!

Yes I'm beginning to think that this is what has happened.

When I asked the kid about any unusual behaviour before the computer broke he mentioned something about upgrading or updating.

When he bought the computer it probably came with a cracked copy of Win XP.

It's a shame because he bought it in good faith and paid quite a lot - ?200 - and now it looks like he's screwed.

Thanks very much for your help, I'll see what I can do and let you know if I manage to get it back up and running.

It's no problem at all.

Good luck - let us know how you get on...

Fixed!

I managed to do a repair install with a borrowed Win XP CD and everything is now working fine. Turns out that Win XP had been activated, so your comment about profile corruption looks about right as the culprit.

Now I'm running Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware and giving the computer a general spring clean. So I expect there may be a few gremlins to sort out yet.

Cheers
