Default Installing Vista on a computer that is partitioned

I have a laptop that some how ended up partiioned when I tried to update from prof 2000 to XP...it has taken up the who computer.

I have a restore cd for my new dell that has vista. I also have my XP cd. what I would like to have happen is the partion removed and either xp or vista reinstalled. i tried to run the vista cd and it gave the error that it wasn't compatible with windows.

Can you help me get rid of the partion and install either vista or XP? I don't need to save any files I have moved them to an exterior drive.
Thanks so much

You just need to delete the partitions, and install Vista to take up the whole drive. To delete the partitions (WARNING: This will erase all data on your drive), go into the recovery console (this can be accessed from the Recovery Console on your XP disk), and do the following-

Code:
diskpart
list disk
select disk [the disk number that showed with list disk, should be '0']
list partition
delete partition [whatever partitions that showed up with delete partition, put their number here]
Once they are all deleted, go ahead and install Vista, but do not select to create a partition, just select to install on the selected hard drive.

Thanks Chris for the quick response. You told me to access the recovery console on my xpdisk. the only way I knew to do this was to search for the file name diskpart on the cd. it brought up one file called that. when I double clicked it it said "windows cannot open this file...diskpart.ex_
what do you want to do...go online to find a program or search your computer. I went online and windows said "windows does not recognize this kind of file.

help!

Boot from the disk, select 'recovery console'.

This is when the computer boots, not when Windows is booted.
