For some unknown reason my laptop has ceased letting me download anything!

Whenever i click any link that requires a download, whether its a lplug in for windows media player, a photo being sent on MSN messenger, a attachment to an email...anything, it acts as if its downloading, but then no file will appear in the destination folder.

I have tried both Internet Explorer and FIrefox, i have manually selected differnet destination folders, i have gone back to a previous system restore, and registry back-up, all of which has failed me!

Any ideas!?

I would like to ask a question before the Tech Team take over.

What is your internet service provider?

As AOL/BT and some others cap your downloads.After you have downloaded so many MB of files they cap your downloads untill the end of the month.Could you check your ISP rules on your speed of connection please.

Have you also lowered your security settings in IE?

Are you direct connect to your modem or using a wireless router?

If you are using a wireless router could you post make and model.

Have you checked your firewall exceptions tab and allow list?

Are you using windows firewall or a routers?

Have you clicked tools internet options and deleted cookies/temp files and history?


Please post back with the information and Tech Team should be with you shortly.

Well, this is unlikely to be a downloading problem in itself due to the nature of downloading a file (anything you see on the internet is downloaded to your computer), especially if it spans multiple applications. (That is, it downloads but does not appear)

It is unlikely, but it's all I can think of for the moment - could you go to folder options (open a folder > tools > folder options in XP, or just type folder options into the start search in vista), and on the 'View' tab select 'Show hidden files and folders'. If the files then show, then that is certainly odd.

Could you also tell me whether the missing files appear when you do a DIR command in command prompt? (Start > Run > CMD > navigate to directory using 'cd [directory]', and then type DIR)
