Default Creating a split bootDVD of recovery partition

I am in the process of creating a boot DVD from the hidden recovery partition on an Acer Veriton PC (Vista Home Premium 32bit).

The recovery option was not accessible on booting the PC (I have tried all keyboard combinations!) so I decided to create a DVD to recover the system now and , if needed, in the future.

I have successfully gained access to the partition and the files.

I am now stuck at the last hurdle. I am using Nero 8 to burn a BootDVD. However, the partition is approximately 7GB in size and won't fit on a single DVD. I can't see how to use Nero to split the partition on to 2 DVDs.

I could buy a Dual Layer DVD but I like the challenge!.

Can you advise if (and how) Nero can be used to do this or can you recommend a (Windows) program that will permit the creation of a boot DVD which can be split on to 2 disks such that there will be a prompt for inssertion of the second disk at the appropriate time?

Many thanks

hey Stormy, welcome to PCHF.

That's one hell of a challenge Stormy. Nero doesn't have to capability of actually splitting the disk, you must do this manually. This isn't a problem in itself, but it's going to be time consuming.

There is also another problem. Since there are so many files involved in the recovery process, it's impossible to tell which files will be used for the first part of the recovery. This means that when it comes to actually using these CD's, you'll be swapping CD's until your blue in the face. If your able to burn dual layer, then I suggest you use it, because I can promise you the 2 cd method is going to be nothing less than a time consuming nightmare!

However, it won't be an issue if you don't plan to make the cd bootable, and restore the recovery partition before actually running through the recovery.

Red face Re: Creating a split bootDVD of recovery partition

Thanks madmonkey for your prompt and informative reply. I kind of guessed it was a tall order. However, if you don't mind I'll see if anyone has any alternatives.

I have another PC (which is fine at the moment) but the hidden partition is 13.5GB so the dual layer DVD approach has a limited appeal.

I would have thought people a lot brighter than me would have come up with a method of being able to specify a split size and write to the requisite number of disks. May be I am wrong (it's certainly been known!).

There seems to me a market for this utility. Having trawled various internet sites and forums to find a solution to this problem it is clear many hundreds of users might benefit.

I live in hope.

Kind regards

Oh yes I agree, however there different manufacturers have their own methods and idea's of what a recovery parition should be, and tend to your their own file systems and software. So although there may be a market out there, I doubt it would be worth it for the amount of work that would be involved, keeping up with these manufacturers.

In reality, there are methods and alternatives out there. I don't know why you were not provided with the original recovery CD's from the start?

Some of these alternatives include using external storage media, external hard drives and usb pens.

If it was me, I would personally scrap the recovery partition. Save space, and use your own method of recovery. I would use Acronis to backup your existing operating system as it stands now onto CD. Because the data can be compressed into a single file, this can easily be spanned onto multiple CD's.

Madmonkey, I thank you again.

I agree with your comments so I guess I will have to do it the hard (easy?) way.

Is this for the manual process for Nero? Would you like me to point you in the right direction?
