Default Windows Installer

I run an Acer lap top with Vista HP and in the last month or so a number of problems has arisen but primarily I am unable to download/add a new printer etc as I get the message ....
"Windows installer service could not be accessed. This can occur if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed".
This is beginning to frustrate me so any suggestions to resolve gratefull received. Many thanks

To start the Windows Installer service

  2. Double-click Windows Installer
  3. Set the Startup type of Windows Installer to Manual
  4. Click Start to start the service.
  5. Click OK.

Thankyou and having gone thru the process it attempted to start on local computer and the following mesage appeared

"The Windows Installer service on Local Computer started and then stopped. Some services stop automatically if they are not in use by other services or programs."

Any idea of next step? Many thanks D

Do you have a genuine activated copy of Windows Vista?

Let's check your system files, go to the Accessories
Right click on Command Prompt
Click on Run as administrator
enter: sfc /scannow
There is a space between "c" and "/".
This could take from minutes to hours to run.
