Default Couple of Issues since SP1 update

My parents system runs on Vista and they received the SP1 update couple of days ago.
now there are 2 issues since the update.
1. The start up is painfully slow , once switched on it takes probably twice as long to boot up as it did previous to the SP1 install
2. I just shut the system down, the screen switched off "no input signal" yet ther was no "windows closing" screen and the tower stayed on for 30seconds or more after this point whizzing away before switching off.

Also, may aswell ask as related to Vista , The System Restore does not work, anyone have an idea on how to kick this in the **** to get it going?
Tried before hand for another issue but resolved it another way.
Everytime its tried it comes up with the message could not complete etc .

Thanks

Here is a few things to do...

1. Download and install this program (it's free) CCleaner ... Alternative Download.
After installing...run the program...click on Analyzer...then click on Run Cleaner.
On the left side of the window, click on Registry...click on Scan for issues...click on Fix selected issues.
This program will cleanup your temp files and cookies.

2. To be sure your system files are intact,
recommend you go to the Accessories
Right click on Command Prompt
Click on Run as administrator
enter: sfc /scannow
There is a space between "c" and "/".
This could take from minutes to hours to run.

3. Go to Control Panel > System
Click on System Protection
Click on the System Protection tab
Make sure there is a check mark in the boxes for the drives.

Hi.
I downloaded Ccleaner and have run that. deleted 856mb of items,
The Sfc / scannow i did twice and both times it flicked a few things on screen and lasted all of 3 seconds ?
Within the control panel i couldnt find any boxe to tick, as may have been in wrong section bt clicked on the protection tab and it took me to restore points.

If the SFC command only took three seconds, then you did something wrong because SFC definitely takes longer than that.

I entered it is as above, it came up with a number of items and then went straight back to the system32 prompt.
Dont know what else i could do to have a different outcome?

Found out the system only had 512mb ram , so uprated it today to 1.5gb and seems to be working a lot better. stilln ot sure what the issue is with the system restore etc but hopefully wont need it .
