Default BlackSOD Yay!

Black screen of death

I have a pointer! And that's it.. Yey.
No safe mode, no VGA mode, no "start with last known good config"... all of them do the same black screen with white pointer. I can whizz around the screen, but that's it, keyboard commands don't respond, can't click, can't open task manager, can't open start menu, nothing.
I don't even have a Vista DVD with me, I only have a recovery Cd which let's me access command prompt. I don't have any restore points to restore to and the "Fix startup problems" says there are no problems with the computer.

I called Microsoft, and they just say that "Since you do not have your Vista DVD to re-install your OS, we cannot help you" basically saying that since I cannot re-install my OS and thus effectively reset my computer to stock Windows settings, they cannot help me.

I don't expect anyone to be able to help.. just sharing my totally awesome experience with Vista Tech Support
It makes me regret buying Vista and not pirating it, at least there'd a be reason as to why I couldn't get Microsoft support for it lol. Bleh.

Needless to say, it was a fresh install of Windows I had just completed a day before leaving to go home (yesterday).

Have you tried repairing from the command prompt? Not sure if the instructions are the same for vista and i can't check atm because I formatted my vista drive and haven't reinstalled yet. Post back if you want them anyway - can't hurt to try.

Yep, tried doing sfc /scannow, doesn't work, and ran /R /F check disk, didn't fix anything, at least it didn't make it boot anyways.

I prefer Vista, I just don't get why it suddenly decided to ghey up on me like that

Didn't really think chkdsk would work for your problem. You probably need to restore it from the repair folder. See my post here - saves me copying and pasting.

http://www.pchelpforum.com/windows-x...tml#post263267

Do up to step 6 - instead step 7 onwards do the following:

cd c:\windows\repair

type: copy DEFAULT c:\windows\system32\config\default
type: copy SAM c:\windows\system32\config\sam
type: copy SECURITY c:\windows\system32\config\security
type: copy SOFTWARE c:\windows\system32\config\software
type: copy SYSTEM c:\windows\system32\config\system

Type Exit - cross fingers and hope it boots.
