Hi could you check if XP is FAT32 or NTFS?

Have you setup Vistas active sync?

Does the XP computer showup in the network on the Vista computer?

Is full access given on XP and Vista on file sharing?

Check firewall settings.

Question Re: Vista to WinXP

Hi could you check if XP is FAT32 or NTFS? Where is this at?

Have you setup Vistas active sync? Don't understand what this is or how to do it.

Does the XP computer showup in the network on the Vista computer? No, plus how do I get to the place that shows both computers in order to do the drag and drop task?

Is full access given on XP and Vista on file sharing? Don't know since I can not do the question above

Check firewall settings. How? my firewall is on.

Thanks again for your patients,,,,,,,

In Vista you drag files to the public folder. In XP you drag to the sharing folder.Permissions and sharing must be setup up on these folders under properties.

Unhappy Re: Vista to WinXP

Here are a few links that could help you out:

Windows Vista Help: Start syncing - NoteThe ability to sync with network folders is not included in Windows Vista Starter, Windows Vista Home Basic, and Windows Vista Home Premium - I have Vista Home Premium

Windows Vista Help: Solving the mystery: How to keep your devices in sync seems this sync thing will delete the original files if I were to update something and all I want to do is transfer what I have on each computer back and forth until I can get everything sorted out and any duplicates corrected to be sure I have what I want and not something that is 1/2 way what I want, if that makes sense. This whole sync thing is way over my head and with my eye sight such as it is I can not sit here and read and re-read a lot of things I do not understand trying to make the right chioces of what to do.

Windows Vista Help: What is the difference between one-way and two-way sync?

Windows Vista Help: Turn User Account Control on or off I don't think I need this as I am the only one using these computers, my wife does not know or want to know about computers. also have no password requirement for this.

How to configure file sharing in Windows XP This has been done but, when I see it in the Vista computer I can not open anything from the XP computer get message to have administrator rights, I AM the administrator

To check wether your XP is 32 bit or NTFS just open defrag it tells you there. Defrag properties, short cut - it said "Target Location: system 32" I guess that is the 32 bit your talking about??

Firewall:Windows XP: Using Windows Firewall OK, fie wall is on and Automatic updates are enabled

On Vista:control panel/Nettwork and Internet/Network sharing.and what am I supposed to do or see here? everything is on except password protected sharing and media sharing which both are off

Control panel/Network and Internet/Firewall.Only thing I have for "network" is; control panel/network and sharing once opened there is nothing for this or the Sync center. I do have the windows fire wall and sync center by itself in the control panel - but what am I supposed to do when they are opened??

Control panel/Network and Internet/Sync Center.

Click start/Network/Add a wireless device tab. Also your public folder is located here. Sorry but I do not understand any of this as I do not have any wireless items so it just said searching for wireless object - non found

When you copy large files to or from earlier operating systems, the copy operation may be slower than expected on some Windows Vista-based computers

Windows Vista Help: Moving and copying files by using the drag-and-drop method again I am sorry, I do not have a clue what I would do in this situation when I looked at the page that popped up, too technicle for me.

In Vista you drag files to the public folder. In XP you drag to the sharing folder.Permissions and sharing must be setup up on these folders under properties

Jelly Bean, I am so sorry to have bothered you for what I thought would be a simple fix to transfer files from one operating system to another as I was able to do with XP to XP.

All I have been getting here is a lot of stuff that is mostly all greek to me and i don't understand 90% of it. I am still a beginner so this may make sense to someone that plays with computers on a daily basis.

Since my eye sight keeps failing me when trying to read all of this stuff I guess i will with great regret have to stop unless you or someone can can put this in step by step format or in simple layman's terms or go remotely into my computer(s) and see what it is your trying to see here. I can't even give you an intelligent answer to anything since I don't what it is your after. (PCHF has done this before for me).

Thanks my friend, will make a donation next month when I get my social security check.

Rich

Default Re: Vista to WinXP

Hi homeinspec - the easiest way for you to share the files between the 2 pc's would be map network drives for the folders on the XP pc that you want to share.

Vista and XP on a network together sometimes can't see each other properly if you look in my network places.

To be able to map network drives you will need to make sure that the username and password you use on the vista pc is also setup as a user on the xp pc. It should not be the same username that you normally use to log onto the XP PC.both need to be different usernames. I would just setup a new user on the the xp pc called Vistashare. Make sure the new account you setup has administrator access and it requires password for security. After you have done this follow the steps below to map the network shares.

Setup Shared Folders on the XP PC
1. Click Start > My Documents > You can either make a new folder to share or share the entire my documents with the Vista PC.
2. To share entire contents of My Documents - Click Share this folder on the left in file and Folder Tasks.
3. Select Share this Folder and type a share name for it - e.g. XPDocs > Click the permissions button > Click Add > In the Enter the object names to select type the new username you created on the XP pc e.g. Vistashare. Click OK
4. You will now see Vistashare in the list - in the bottom of that screen - put a tick in Allow for Full Control > Click Apply > Click OK

Make sure both pc's are connected to your hub.

You will need to know what the IP Address of the XP PC is to do this next step. To find out the IP Address click Start > Run > Type: CMD > Click OK
In the window that opens type: ipconfig > Press Enter
Write down the IP Address.

Map the Network Drive on the Vista PC.
1. Click Start > Computer
2. Click Map Network Drive
3. In the windows that opens in the folder section type the following: \\192.168.1.2\XPDocs
Replace the 192.168.1.2 with XP PC's IP Address and the XPDocs with the name that you chose when you shared the folder.
4. Make sure there is a tick in Reconnect at Logon. Click Connect Using a different user name. Type in the username and password that you setup earlier on the XP PC. Click OK.
5. Click Finish

The shared my documents folder on the XP pc will now be shown. You can access these anytime from the Vista PC by clicking Start > Computer. If your in windows explorer the mapped drive will show up as another drive called \\XPDocs on 192.168.1.1
You can also now access this drive if from within other programs e.g. if your working in photoshop and you want save the file your working on to the XP pc just select the shared drive from the Save As menu.

Please post back if you have any problems.
