Hey everyone, I'm new here, but I really need some help with this...

Earlier today I was using my laptop and had a monitor plugged in (if that matters) and I was listening to music and organizing files (it has no problems with minor multitasking like that), and I left for a bit. When I came back everything but the mouse was frozen. I tried CTRL+ALT+DEL and a buncha stuff and eventually had to restart it. Now it gives me an error when trying to start. It gets through the Dell loading logo, but brings up a menu with the options:
Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
Start Windows Normally

When I click option 1, the screen goes black for a second like it is trying, but then goes right back to that menu. The other option (2) pretty much resets the computer, and then brings me back to that menu. I've tried restarting, and I also ran the repair option with my Vista disc (original OS), which finished but didn't do anything.

I have no idea what to do, and I'm REALLY DESPERATE! I need my laptop to work! PLEASE HELP!!!

Hi jacfalcon - Welcome to PCHF!

Insert your Vista disc. When promted to hit any key to boot from do so.

Enter correct localisation info > click next > Do Not Click install Vista now > Click Repair your computer down the bottom left of the window.

Select Operating system to repair > click next.

On the next windows > select Command Prompt

At the command prompt type the following: chkdsk /f /r

This may a take while to run. After this has completed see if windows will boot properly - if not post back.

When I click next after selecting the operating system to repair, it automatically goes to the "Startup is checking your system for problems..." and is "Attempting repairs..."

And I've already done this check I'm running now and it didn't fix it, so unless oyu know how to do the command prompt, then I dunno if it will work...

WOAH, I just decided to click "Click here for diagnostic repair details" button after the second attempt at repairing fixed, and here's most of what it said (ignoring the parts where it ran successful tests).

IT'S WORKING ALL THE SUDDEN! I guess that second run of the repair fixed it, which I did because I was trying to follow yur directions. SO I'M VERY THANKFUL THAT YOU INDIRECTLY HELPED ME SOLVE THIS!

hi
please can you help me with my comp,
i also get the startf toshiba come up and then the same as the other person you gave adivce to, it says launch startup repair etc but all i get is the cursor and nothing else. please help
