Hi Sean

Yes it is possible, however in order to do it correctly you must have a Vista DVD and it will require you to reinstall Vista.

The correct way to do this is install Windows XP first and Windows Vista second.
The oldest operating system is always the first one to be installed.

The most important thing to remember when you have a dual boot system is to treat each OS as a separate installation. In other words do not cross use applications etc.

Don't install an application on Windows XP and try to use it when booted into Vista and vica versa. Also don't use the Vista disk management in any way. Do all disk management while booted into XP and don't alter the Vista partition once it has been setup and Vista is installed.

Hi,

It is possible to dual boot with Vista installed first but it requires editing of the boot configuration file, this can be done with a piece of software for Vista. This step-by-step guide should help you:

I'd just like to ask if anyone has tried the dual boot setup with Vista first and XP second ?

I have and I'd not recommend it to anyone.

This one for instance, I'd not recommend unless you consider yourself to be an advanced user. It is prone to errors during and after the set up. It is also a difficult setup to manage.
How to dual boot Vista and XP (with Vista installed first) -- the step-by-step guide

The recommended method is XP first and Vista second.
By installing XP first, you require nothing other than to install Vista second and it's that simple. No extra tools or altering boot files MBR etc etc.
Once Vista has been installed and you reboot the boot options appear automatically and you have the option to boot into either Windows XP or Windows Vista.
It works plain and simple.

The safe and recommended method is always oldest OS first.

Pops valid points. And if the vista install has nothing on it, or it doesn't matter if it is reinstalled the OP might as well follow that route. I have both dual booted and had XP first because I already had it on there before buying vista and the dual boot did work flawlessly

Yes JellyBean sorry i got cut off the other day

Ok i have read through Your recomendations For My problem And I have Came To A Conclusion that i have 3 options

1.Make vista dual boot with Xp
2.Run Xp on a virtual machine
3.Run a portable version of xp from usb

The 2 i would most likely be using are options 2 & 3 as making a dual boot looks like too much work for me as i said i'm only 15 and i dont wanna break my laptop lol

Ok About running a virtual machine or running a portable version ....Would I Be Able to run the internet and install programs like games and stuff on the virtual machine or the protable version....

The reason i want xp is beacause there is a couple of Applications for my games that will NOT run on vista due to the apps being created for the sole purpose of xp

Any Helpo Would Be Great

Running in Virtual Machine will not be able to play games very well, as you will be using the RAM and CPU for vista and XP at the same time. VM is not as fast as normal. Internet will be available as the connection is bridged between the two OS.

Well i have a 1gb of DDR Ram So I take it that the machine would run quite slow ? Im running vista home basic !

What About The Portable version form a usb stick as xp will be booting directly when the laptop starts therefore it wont be running vista only xp ?

Yes 1gb ram is barely enough to run vista alone. I have never used xp on a usb stick sorry. But I know the disk speed will be slower so that will affect performance.
