Default [Resolved] backing up files in xp to recover them in vista??

Hi, Im going to do a clean install tomorrow of Windows Vista, well Im supposed to get the DVD tomorrow, if not I might have some time left, but I think it should arrive tomorrow... I dont want to upgrade XP to Vista because last time I upgraded from Win2000 and in a way, my computer got a bit slower and I had problems with the user accounts and stuff. So I want to do a clean install, but I still want to keep my pictures, videos and music
that I got right now in XP, I could burn everything in a CD or two, but yea, I only got one CD and I dont want to waste money on a few files that were left out in a new CD. Any program that compresses files A LOT or any backup tool that will let me fit around 2.5GB of files into a normal 700MB CD and when I open the backup or file will work in Vista? Thanks in advance!

Hi , I don't know of any, if i was you I would just use another disk and copy the info without any compression. It's not worth the risk of of losing important data.

Thanks for your response, Im trying to see the possibility that well, Im also getting a new hard drive tomorrow, Im trying to see if I can hook both HDs up at the same time, and transfer some of the files I want to keep and then just format my actual HD to then trade it in and hook the new hard drive up as my primary drive. Is that possible? As if the HD was already formatted, I wouldnt need to format it anymore and I could just do an upgrade right? Thanks.

I'm not sure I follow exactly. You can hook up another hard drive and copy your files, if as you say the hard drive is formatted. Then you can upgrade or do a clean install on your original hard drive. Is that what you want to do?

No, I meant as in, I hook the new hard drive to my computer with the old one at the same time, and kind of drag the files I wanted to keep to the new hard drive and then format my old one and install Vista in the new one... well I had to delete a bunch of files, couldnt fit everything between my usb and the only working CD I had lol and now I got Vista and its pretty good... I guess this thread isnt necessary anymore, thanks anyways
