Default [Resolved] "Could not start file is missing or crrupt:" (My dads laptop)

Ok so my mom wen't and got my dads laptop to check her e-mail and she was welcomed by this:

Just a black screen that reads:

Thats:

Windows could not start because the following file is missing
or corrupt:
<Windows root>\system32\hal.dll.
Please re-install a copy of the above file.

My dad has a bunch of stuff on this computer that he needs for work so i don't want to mess it up any more then it may already be.

Now it sounds to me like i can pop in a Windows XP Pro disk and transfer that file, but how and dose it need to be the same disk he used to instal his OS.

Any help will be great he will be needing this computer back ASAP for work.

To me it sounds bad but who knows it could just be a simpe fix.....

I am sorry about that i don't know why it posted twice i have had that happen once before.

But on the other hand thanks a ton, that worked i don't know what he would have done had it been worse and lost his files. He freacked out when he saw that but i told him it just needs a new copy of that file like it says (even though i had know idea how to copy a new file) but you helped me figure it out, i told him that someone here could!

Not a BIG deal -- just making sure the rules are followed-- sometimes when users are not sure what to post an issue under --they'll post it in 2-3-4 different forums-- slows our response time

Glad you got it fixed !
