Default [Pending] "Windows Explorer has stopped working" error message

I have just bought a new laptop 2 weeks ago, pre-installed with Vista Home Premium and I haven't had any problems until just yesterday with this new Operating System. I've searched all over the internet for solutions, but the people who have the same problem seem to have problems with malware or spyware. Some people have suggested uninstalling programs that might have been installed on the current date, but the only program I have installed is Avast anti virus. I'm pretty sure it's not a problem with spyware but just to be sure I am running an anti virus scan again (I already did before and found nothing).
Oh ya forgot about the problem: Everytime I open my Program Files folder under the C drive a message comes up saying that Windows Explorer has stopped working, then Searching for a solution and then it just restarts windows explorer. I have checked with other folders and this doesn't happen. Weird thing is though that when I changed the way I view the folder for (previously my) documents, from details to tiles (the icons), the same thing happened. And when I open program files for a brief 2 seconds, it's in tiles mode.
Sorry the message is so long, just wanted to be exact. Anyone else have/had this problem or have a solution?

P.S. is Avast even any good of an anti virus?
P.P.S. I am able to access control panel and add/remove programs (program features) and this problem doesn't occur when I login in - as it did for some people

Here's the Hijackthis log if it helps.

hi david, welcome to the forums. Start hijackthis, close all other windows, click 'perform system scan only', place a tick next to the following, and click 'fix checked':

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file)
O13 - Gopher Prefix:

reboot, and post a new log please.

What does this look like in your log:

O4 - HKCU..Run: [?????????] ??????????????e

Does it have any info, or is it all question marks on that side as well?

thanks,

v

Hey guys, really sorry about not responding before. I had fixed the problem myself by re-installing Nero - well at least that's what I assume, the problem stopped after. I just performed the tasks valis has told me and I will post a new log just incase.

O4 - HKCU..Run: [?????????] ??????????????e looks exactly like it does while viewed in the hijackthis program as it does in the text file log (all question marks).

Default Re: "Windows Explorer has stopped working" error message

give this a crack....dunno how it will play with vista, but then, don't really know yet how ANYTHING will play with vista.

Please download SUPERAntiSpyware Home Edition (free version)
  • Install it and double-click the icon on your desktop to run it.
  • It will ask if you want to update the program definitions, click Yes.
  • Under Configuration and Preferences, click the Preferences button.
  • Click the Scanning Control tab.
  • Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked:
    • Close browsers before scanning
    • Scan for tracking cookies
    • Terminate memory threats before quarantining.
    • Please leave the others unchecked.
    • Click the Close button to leave the control center screen.
  • On the main screen, under Scan for Harmful Software click Scan your computer.
  • On the left check C:\Fixed Drive.
  • On the right, under Complete Scan, choose Perform Complete Scan.
  • Click Next to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
  • After the scan is complete a summary box will appear. Click OK.
  • Make sure everything in the white box has a check next to it, then click Next.
  • It will quarantine what it found and if it asks if you want to reboot, click Yes.
  • To retrieve the removal information for me please do the following:
    • After reboot, double-click the SUPERAntispyware icon on your desktop.
    • Click Preferences. Click the Statistics/Logs tab.
    • Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
    • It will open in your default text editor (such as Notepad/Wordpad).
    • Please highlight everything in the notepad, then right-click and choose copy.
  • Click close and close again to exit the program.
  • Please paste that information here for me with a new HijackThis log.
thanks,

v

Some of the stuff might be missing from before; thanks to the geniuses at BestBuy who decided to lock my Acer Empowering Technology Manager so I wouldn't be able to restore or repair Windows using the backup hard drive myself. So I had to reformat my hard drive and I was able to re-install some of my stuff. And I'm not sure if you read from before but I fixed the problem by re-installing Nero, which seemed to be causing the problem. Well there's still that question mark-covered thing in the hjt log - maybe it's part of vista?
Thanks a lot anyway.
