Hi, just a quick question, I need to boot into dos so that i can run a manufactures diagnostics for my Hard drive as on this page:

SAMSUNG Hard Disk Drive - support - utilities

I have created the CD-rom as my computer doesnt have a floppy drive, my question is how do i boot into dos mode so that i can execute E:\HUTIL.exe and run the diagnostics?

Have had a quick look around but not found any usefull information, anyone help?

Hi there, this is quite a simple process. What you need to do is start your PC and enter the Bios. Once in here, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to highlight a tab called "boot" or something similar. Use the arrow keys again to change the order so that the CD Rom is the first to boot and then the hard disk is second et. Save the changes and then reboot, with the CD in the drive.

Thanks for such a quick reply! I did what you said and when it booted it loaded the cd-rom.

Problemo being that this came up:

"Cant open CD driver CD001. SHSUCDX cant install

your ram drive is loaded at c:
out of memor error
bad command or filename"

Then it had the C:\> so i tried typing in E:\hutil.exe and e:\ but it kept coming back with bad command or filename.

I've burnt the cd right, and the cd contains the files its suppost to.

ah the reason for this is that you have a Ram drive instead of a Rom drive, so you would need to buy a rom drive in order for this to work.

Sorry to sound stupid, but whats the difference between a Ram drive and a Rom drive? Never heard of a ram drive before? ...Also is this ram drive worse than having a rom drive?

Also, how does it stop me from booting from a cd, because i've used cd's to install things onto the pc in windows?

ROM means Read Only Memory
RAM means Random Access Memory

The computer can write to a RAM address.
The computer cannot write to a ROM address.
The information in a ROM is preset. It can not be changes.
If it's bad, the chip must be replaced.

If the only difference between a RAM drive and a ROM drive is about being able to write to the drive, I still dont see why this would stop me being able to boot the hutil.exe in dos from a cd?
