Hi tarn, welcome to the PCHF.

If you have a wireless internet account, you will most likely have 4 lan ports on the router.

while i would recommend the route of using a cable from the router, you can enable internet sharing on vista, but unfortunatelly i have never seen this actually work successfully

well in theory is IS possible but i have never been able to get it to work witht the built in settings due to ip address issues, but i will look into it.

EDIT: the service built into vista will not function correctly on a router as it needs a certain ip address, i think it would be fairly difficult to share your connection, yo umay need a wireless card for the pc, but wait for other responses and have a look around on the net about it

Id say just pull out your wallet and get a wifi card, its about 9pounds sterling here for one so shouldnt be past 30 dollars there. You have 2 headaches to solve here:

1. as jono said theres no way ive ever found to get inet sharing working when the the pc doing the sharing is connected to a router.

2. ubuntu+vista home = fTw??!!

As long as the cable run is 100 metres or less, why not just dig that trench and get some pvc plumbing pipe for protection??? its cheaper, more secure, more reliable and faster than wifi anyway. Get yourself down to any old office buildings that are getting refurbished for free runs of cable.

Anyway good luck and keep posting.
