Question [Answered] Windows Vista 2 Hard drives problem

Hi guys i am new to this forum and i really need your help.

I installed windows xp on c:\ drive which 250gb and i have recently bought 500 which is d:\ drives and i installed winodws vista on it.

I can access all windows vista files and foldes including windows vista user account folder which has my documents etc when logged on in xp, but when i have vista logged in i can't access xp files and folder like my doucments, music etc. Why isn't vista letting me open them files. I tried changing owenership from xp to vista of my documents folder but wen i logged back in xp it had all folders in my document but noting in them. I screwed the setting somehow. I know its possible to get full access to my first drives which has xp installed in it but i don't how to without damaging the files. Last time i played around with security in vista i ended up losing everything in c:\ which has xp installed then i had to install xp and both vista back.

It would be very helpfull if you guys reply i really need this to work.

Thanks in advance

Hi ronald, welcome to the PCHF.

I'm just going to get my head around this first...

You've installed XP on C, and Vista on D?
You can access all your Vista files from XP, but you are unable to access your XP files from Vista?
While in Vista, you attempted to take ownership of XP files. Does this let you see them in Vista?
Going back to XP, you can no longer see the files that you took ownership of in Vista?

Thanks for reply you are right till point You can access all your Vista files from XP. but when i log back in to vista it won't let open xp files.

I have tried taking owenership when logged in in vista of xp files, vista takes owenership of xp files but when you log back into xp it opens my documents folder but no data in it but when you log back in vista it displays all files of xp with data.

I ended up messing xp user profile taking ownership of Documents and Settings of xp files when logged in vista. When ever i tried logging in xp i ended up getting couldn't load user profile so it loaded default profile.I had to reinstall both of OS. I don't know what to do here i want to run both OS i like them both. Please help.

Thansk for rreply again.

The biggest problem is they both use the same security methods. Your best bet would be to keep all your files outside of "Documents and Settings" for XP, and outside of "Users" for Vista.

Try just created a C:\My Stuff folder on put all the files you want to access from both OS's in there...that's all i can really think of to be honest.

I could be wrong, but isn't this what XP has the "Shared Documents" folder and why Vista has the "Public" folder?

That's for multiple users on the same computer and same install of windows...might be worth a shot
