Default [Fixed] Merging C: and D: Partitions

Hi there

I recently purchased an Acer Aspire 5633WLMi laptop from Comet and everything works perfectly. I'm running Vista Home Premium. However, I soon noticed that the hard drive (160GB) is split into 3 partitions. One of the partitions contains what i presume is the Acer recovery stuff of which, to be honest, i know nothing about! The other two partitions are C: and D: , both of which are split 71.2GB to 70.9GB respectively. Having the hard drive split in two is very inconvenient so i went about research ways to either merge the two partitions, or shrink the D: partition and extend the C: one. Firstly i attempted to use the partition management tool in computer management. It indicated that both C: and D: are both NTFS. I reduced the D: partition however the option to extend the C: partition is greyed out.

I did some searches and purchased Paragon's Partition Manager Porfessional 8.5. There is an option to merge partitions in this program however it says that the C: partition is unformatted and the D: partition is NTFS.

As i bought the laptop from comet i don't have an installation CD for Vista so I am reluctant to format the hard drive completely as i would have to buy Vista. Does anyone have any idea what i can do? Is Partition Manage incorrectly detecting the C drive or did acer make some kind of mistake when setting the laptop up? I'm desperate to get rid of, or significantly reduce, the D: partition so any help would greatly appreciated!!
Thanks!
Matt

Welcome to PCHF.

You bought a Comet computer. They have configured the hard drive to their design. I suggest you do NOT try to change the partition configuration unless you want to buy a copy of Vista Home Premium.

Since this is a new computer, suggest you check your system drivers by clicking on Start>Windows Update. Click on "Check for updates". Next, recommend you click on the Mr. Driver link in my signature and check the status of your non-system drivers.

I'm pretty sure that Comet wouldn't have any input on how the hard drive is set up. It being just a department type store i would presume that they are simply selling the laptops as they are given to them? I've looked around on the net and seen that other people have the same issue as me (that the hard drive is split) so i presumed it was due to acer. Thanks for the help though.
