Lightbulb [Resolved] Vista Defender Update time

Well guys, it's update time for the Defender, again.
And, what do we have to do to enable the Defender to update....

First, we turn OFF the Windows Update(r) ....

In case you are not sure how...

Right click on the Computer icon (in the upper left corner of your monitor ... usually)...
Click on Properties...
In the lower left corner, click on Windows Update...
Click on Change settings...
Right next to the RED shield, click on "Never check for updates (not recommended)"...
Now click on "Start"...
Click on Windows Update...
You may have a notice of a pending install.
If so, click on the install button.
If not, click on the Check for Updates link.

Install the Defender update (plus any other updates you might have missed installing)...
Upon completion of the update(s), turn on the MS Auto Updater again.

Repeat the above procedure, except this time you are turning "Windows Update" ON.

***Mr. Hengis*** Save this message for next month (?), when the next update comes out. Then, you can just send this message out again.

See you on the other side...

Now or then. If you are not online, then the Internet can't hurt your computer. Can it!

If you are ever really concerned about your computers online safety, drop a message in the "Security & Safety" folder at the top middle of this page. They will know more about the current Viruses and BUGs going around and give you a better idea as to how much this update will affect your computer's security.

Good Luck...and welcome to the PCHF site. If you have problems with your new computer, I'm sure one of the BRAINAC here will be able to help you set it right.

It doesn't! Part of the installation of Windows is a query to enable Windows to automatically update it's software. But, if you are not online, it can not implement the Windows Update program. Assuming you gave/give the OK to turn on the Update program during the install process, when you do go online you will be automatically downloading updates to the Windows software and drivers.

I hope that clears up your understanding of the process.

Vista's Windows Defender is the only Vista software, that we have found sofar, that requires special treatment that is detailed at the beginning of this thread. For some reason, XP does not have this problem. Probably, if and when this Vista SP1 is released (of it ever is), it will probably have a fix so this process will not be needed. But, I'm not going to hold my breath.
