Hi amanda - welcome to PCHF

If vista was on the PC to begin with then you will need to buy an XP disc, these can be picked up for as little as £55. Look around and find a copy and then you can install xp.

You will find (at least I did) that going from Vista to XP is not straight forward. Even if you have an XP disk.
Also regarding different sound or no sound. I have found that Vista handles sound differently than XP and requires a new Vista compatible sound (card) driver. The sound and other drivers that came with your motherboard are probably for XP. This is what I found out when I built from scratch a Vista system using the latest Core2DUO setup from Intel.
