Hi i just baught the above laptop and it works fine i just dont like all of the useless software that is taking up space on it! i tried reinstalling vista on it and when i did so i insaled the drivers on the c drive only to find that the memory stick duo icon didnt appear! there was an icon there but the sort of icon that appears when you dont have the correct software to open a file. the card slot did work though but the icon didnt. i have now pressed f10 and rerstored the pc to the factory settings with all of this usless stuff that i dont want again. i know this may seem like not much of a problem to alot of you but things like that just bother me.

So to conclude - I want my pc completley blank (with vista on it obviously) to install only the sofware i want and i want only the drivers with no factory software.

any help on how to acheive this would be most appreciated

Welcome to PCHF, we have a wonderful team of techs here, and I am certain that we can get you up and running.

I laugh because that proprietary garbage makes me crazy too. You sound just like me.

I am assuming that you have the stand alone versoin of Vista, correct?

You will want to make a list of the drivers that you need, your vidcard, sound, etc. Your drivers should all be located in the C:\Drivers folder, make sure to burn this to a CD, along with the C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386 folder.

The best way to do a clean install is to reformat the HDD and then do the install, however, you must be aware that this will wipe the partition that allows you to hit the F10 key and take it back to factory specs. I would make sure that I had the recovery CDs just in case.

Also, Sony tends to use a Shared Library, and other programs that some drivers such as your sound may be dependant on, you should be able to find all of the original drivers and updates here Sony Support.

When you find the driver for whatever has the ? icon, go to Google and look it up along with any other "bad" drivers you might have. Install them and restart your system.
