moosc, if your computer will not run Vista, and you have a good BIOS, then perhaps you should return to XP unless you have a hardware problem associated with the BIOS.

If you want to run vista, i recommend no less than 1GB, though 2GB or more is highly highly recommended. A minumum of a dual core (Intel Dual-Core E2160 or Athlon 2.1Ghz) is smart, and a good graphics card is recommended (at least a Radeon 2400XT or a Geforce 8400GS) with a fast harddrive to help run vista.
