Vista is not as computer intensive as it says it is. I have the Ultimate edition on my system, and while it is a more power machine, it's not like the OS uses very much. I'd say it's only slightly heavier than XP, and you can disable a lot of the effects that use your system resources. However, since Vista will be very error prone and have little compatibility, I'd wait at least 6 months before fully switching over. I would install both copies of windows, and test out vista fully before you decide to switch, and even then I'd keep a copy of XP installed somewhere just in case.

I beg to differ.
When running everything on - areo, glass, etc etc - vista uses over 700mb idle
XP uses just over 300mb while idle

Best way to test another operating system - is to set up Virtual Server on your computer (Free from microsoft) And install it as a virtual machine. Load it whenever you want. Keep XP until you're completely satisfied with its performance.

Custom - you heard right, nothing except 1 or 2 drivers are being allowed to touch any level NEAR the core...which is good - makes for a more stable environment.

They are also implementing a new method called "Sand boxing"
Have a read here if you're interested. I've seen it in action at a Dell conference....was pretty nice

It's a matter of what you want. I'm dual booting and have very few errors with Vista. When I first used vista, I had a great first impression, i loved it. The more I use it, the more I realize that I really don't like it quite that much and would prefer to stick with XP for as long as possible.

I had this sent me by a Nod32 reseller, who also is a member of this forum, but owing to his work commitments cannot get here as much as he would like. I'll quote this bit from the .pdf file which you can download from here.

http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~wombat1945/ESET_NOD32v2.7_ProductBulletin.pdf

NOD32 is compatible with Microsoft Windows Vista

Runs on Microsoft’s latest operating system so users can enjoy state of the art protection with the latest hardware and software. NOD32 does not conflict with Vista security services. PatchGuard (Kernel Patch Protection) is not a new security feature in Vista – it was first implemented in the 64-bit versions of Windows Server 2003 and XP over a year ago.

Several other anti-virus companies rely on patching the kernel directly, or “kernel hacking”, to operate. This has ALWAYS been discouraged by Microsoft as inherently unsafe because it can affect the performance reliability of the operating system. NOD32 does not perform kernel patching or other activities which might destabilize the kernel.

“The goals of these types of [AV] software are obviously laudable, but these practices also may cause reliability and performance problems.

Scott Field, Architect for Kernel Security at Microsoft, and MSDN Blogger.
