hey i have vista home premium 32 bit on my laptop and have just bought windows 7 ultimate 64bit. would i need vista 64bit ultimate to upgrade or will i have to do a clean install?

Hi and welcome tinferno.
Sorry, you can't upgrade 32-bit to 64-bit. Windows 7 Upgrade Paths and anyway, I would always recommend a clean install of a new OS.
