Exclamation W7 won't recognise Gfz card

Hello, I recently installed Windows 7 on a laptop with XP previously. Everything is running fine apart from the graphics card, the Display Adaptor listed in Device Manager is "Standard VGA Graphics Adaptor."

No nVidia drivers will install because my "hardware does not support them," it's like W7 isn't aware the GPU exists.

I've ran Everest and it does show that the chip didn't run away:

I'm grateful that something can find my GPU!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated as this is my only computer, and Windows 7 is lovely!

Hi and welcome to PC Help Forum

Have you carried out a Windows update since upgrading?

Hello, thanks for the swift reply! Yes, I have no more updates available via Windows Update. At a loose end really, hard to know what's actually wrong.

I didn't install any nVidia drivers on my clean install of XP before installing Windows 7, would this make any difference?

Ok, grab this free tool. Driver Cleaner Professional download from Guru3D.com

Download the latest Nvidia drivers
Use the tool to clear out all of your Nvidia drivers
Go to Device Manager and right-click uninstall the graphics card listed
Re-boot and install the new drivers when prompted

I did as you suggested, to no avail. I'm afraid the problem persists, nVidia still claims that I don't have suitable hardware (http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/3272/nvidiafail.jpg).

Here's a screenshot of what the Device Manager actually says: http://img2.imageshack.us/img2/6196/devicemanager.jpg

I tried disabling/uninstalling this, but everytime W7 reboots, it installs the drivers and re-enables it without my permission.

Well I'm going to do a clean install of Vista, get things working on that, and then upgrade to Windows 7.

Thanks for the help, it is greatly appreciated, I just don't think there's an easy answer to this one without reformatting and starting from scratch.

Honestly, with the amount of changes between XP and 7, it will pay you massive dividends to do a format > clean install.
