Default bootmgr missing

my c: drive that vista pro is installed is getting old and a bit small, so i purchased a new 1TB SATA drive and installed a fresh install of vista pro on it. When i reboot, vista (bootmanager) gives me the option which OS to load - thats ok, just annoying.

I unplugged the c: drive, rebooted to the vista DVD, ran repair on the new drive - and vista gave the error it could not repair, so bootmgr i suspect still lives on the c: drive. I tried a few times, but no luck. I have to keep that HDD plugged in!

My drive structure now looks like this (all NTFS)

c: healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)
j: healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dump, Primary Partition)

Any ideas on how to get the j: drive my OS drive!!

Looks to me like Vista is on the J: drive.

Tell us exactly what you did when installing Vista.

ok -
1. c:drive vista pro for almost 2 years. still, to this moment, runs fine.
2. bought a second SATA drive, installed in SATA-3 port, formatted it, called at j: drive, then installed vista pro on it
3. Vista runs great on new j: drive, but i have to choose it from the bootmanager each time i turn on the computer. i can still select the c: drive, which will work, but i want to format that drive and use it for storage
4. set boot to DVD drive, installed vista dvd, and ran repair on selected the j: drive
5. nothing changed, boot manager still looks for c: drive.
6. unplugged c: drive, and re-ran step 4
7. windows barked it could not fix error, and offered to 'send' in error.

does that help! Thanks!

Why didn't you just install the 1TB in sata 1 and install Vista to that, then pull your old stuff off the original C: drive attached via usb perhaps?
