Default McAfee slowing computer

Is it possible my McAfee virus & spyware software itself is the cause of my computer going crazy during a complete scan? The scan is taking longer than ever to perform, up to 10 hours. Normally it took an hour or hour and a half. I've used it for 12 years, never had a major problem. During a scan things freeze up, am unable to connect to the internet, & can take several minutes between screens. Several techs at McAfee have had remote access to my computer. They find no problem. Finally one told me I had an infection, & was sent to their virus techs at $89. They worked for over at hour, caused some info to be deleted, but found no viruses. They said they would refund the $89. since there was no problem. They also installed Internet Explorer 8 in the process. Then they sent an e-mail attachment which caused my e-mail to shut down with a message it was closing for safety. At that point the computer completely froze up, & pulling the plug was the only option. I had the Iwon toolbar on my computer which was partially removed by them. I further removed the program after reading of several people having major problems with it. Some say it has spyware & until it is completly removed computers can have all kinds of problems. Would the best thing to do be to try another virus software program? I have had an occasional freeze up when not doing a scan, but for the vast amount of time the computer works ok when not doing a full scan. It does a quick scan with no problem.

hi kajyal, welcome to the pchf ,

have you recenty uninstalled a programe recently that deleted some shared files on your pc ? ..this could have caused the problems with your antivirus ,

if not , and you still have the software key for your a/v try uninstalling it an reinstall it to see if that helps ,

in the meantime try clicking the " prework " link in my signature at the bottom of this post , and follow the instructions

post the logs created by the programes and let our security staff have a look at them , to make sure there are no viruses / malware on your machine ,

look forward to your reply ,,BBJ

Hi - Welcome back to PCHF ..........

Never been a fan of McAfee (or Norton). You even need a special tool to uninstall it:
|MG| McAfee Consumer Product Removal Tool 2.0.155.1 Download

I'd strongly suggest you follow the PreWork instructions in the link below to ensure your PC is clean and then move to something like AVG Free.

Well, if you have 1 GB RAM and less than 1.5 GHz CPU, I would say it is your system man. McAfee is one of those bigger programs, and it may be bogging your system down. I would just recommend another program that is faster and smaller. Zone Alarm is very fast, and Norton 2009 was improved so much over earlier versions that it recieved fastest in most types of speed and resource tests. Zone Alarm IS 2009 is $40 average, and Norton IS 2009 $60 average. Both very excellent, so I can't say what is better, but both are known for very good speed and use of resources (Norton only 2009 though, all before that was very slow)
