Default Windows Defender / AVG conflict

Hi,

Please can someone tell me how to turn off Windows Defender?

I am using AVG –paid version, since I was having problems with the free version earlier this year. But I just realised that Windows Defender is also running, and my computer is running very slowly. I asked AVG but they wouldn’t help.

Thanks

Stew

Hello Stew,

You can easily Uninstall it through Start -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Windows Defender -> Uninstall or Remove

Thank you for your response. However, should I be uninstalling it, or should I just switch it "off"? Please confirm?
Thank you.

Stew,

If it's going to be OFF, why keep it installed?

Hmmm..why indeed.

Anyway Stew, here's how you turn it off (and on)

1. Open Windows Defender by clicking the Start button , clicking All Programs, and then clicking Windows Defender.

2. Click Tools, and then click Options.

3. Under Administrator options, select or clear the Use Windows Defender check box, and then click Save. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation.

I would suggest that turning off is the correct option if you are having issues (conflicts) with one or more applications and are troubleshooting a problem.

Uninstall only when you are sure that the application is not needed again.

Stew,

LucianP is correct. For troubleshooting - Off IS a better choice.

I DO use both AVG 8.5 and Windows Defender together and do NOT experience slowness.

Have you checked your system for malware? If you wish to pursue that option, please review the PreWork document found in my signature line and post the requested logs back into this thread.
