I recently have started having problems with a virus scan with McAfee taking 6 to 8 hours to complete. According to McAfee's checker program there is nothing wrong with their software on my computer. Now I am receiving a message at startup that McAfee needs to be fixed. When I hit their fix button it says to ignore the message, the problem is that a full scan has not been completed in a month. My Dell computer shuts down if there is no movement, usually in 5 to 10 minutes which makes it hard to do a complete scan. It's always been that way, assume Dell makes that way to save energy. The only way I can do a complete scan is to be on the computer & using it regularly for almost 8 hours straight. This is nearly impossible. It used to take about 2 hours to do a complete scan. I just completed an 8 hour session which showed no new viruses. I've also experienced brief freezeups on certain websites which clear in about 30 seconds. On a few occasions I've rec'd a message that Internet Explorer has stopped working due to Flash Player. Any idea why McAfee is taking 8 hours to complete?

Hi
I would like to suggest that you do the prework (link in my sig) and post the resulting logs back here. We can then move you to the HJT forum and have the security team check them to rule out or help remove any Malware that may be lurking, after which we can get the Techs involved if needed. |

Looks to me that there might be some viruses around on your computer. Since you encounter some freezing it probably is a virus or something's taking up a lot of RAM on your computer. I suggest opening task manager> processes and then google each process that you see in that process tab. One process might be from a virus or malware so for example I see a process called kalc3.exe (not a real process, just an example) and I just google "kalc3.exe" and then in the google search engine a site should tell me if it is a bad process or not. Meaning, if it is from a virus. For removing viruses I suggest using SUPERAntiSpyware for spyware and Malwarebyte's anti-malware for for malware and some other things. Both programs are free for removing viruses. Remember if an anti-virus program does not recognize a virus, the virus will NOT get caught. For removing rootkits I suggest Panda Anti-rootkit.
~Hope that helps. Last edited by Mazchazo; 04-22-2009 at 03:24 AM. |
