I can't seem to find whether it is public or private in XP. I can't find where that would be listed.
We don't really have an administrator. Actually we used to have only the modem from the satellite and one PC on the internet. Since then we've gotten a few PCs and added the switch. Most recently a guy from a computer shop in town came out here to set up the new PCs, printer, switch, and set the PCs to print through the computer next to the printer. Could he have made this a private network? Would he be the guy to talk to? It's also a little tough to get to him and his English isn't great, but I can try and bring an interpreter if I can't get the right info the first time.

We've gone to the Control Panel-Network Connections that you had in your picture on her VISTA PC.
Looking at the Local Area Connection, for each column: Status- Unknown Network Device- Marvell Yukon, etc... Connectivity- Only local access Network Category- Public Network Owner- System Type- LAN or High Speed internet |

The last attachment is the correct place.
Click on View > Details (or List if XP has no Details option). Now that we know that the Vista PC is setup for Public connection, the question is whether the XP PC is setup for Public or Private. This is not the likely problem since the Vista PC worked at the Internet Shop, but can you verify in the Control Panel > Windows Firewall that IE is in the exception listing and that there is a check mark associated with it. I'm off to work now, so will check back after work.

I checked in the list form and there wasn`t any public/private listing. I right clicked on the bar above the columns and all of the options were checked to be viewed.
We`ve come back to town and I`m typing this on her PC again at the same internet shop. On the Network and SHare center page the public bench is shown again. SHould I check that firewall listing on the XP or Vista PC? And does the fact that we`re using Firefox have any bearing? |

On the #15 posting, the image shows a "Detail" button. Click on that button. Perhaps it will provide useful information. Please post an image of the Window that the Detail button creates. Also, I noticed that your first posting said - "I got some help before and -disabled the DHCP Broadcast Flag for all the network adapters on the system" Take a look at the image in your #15 posting. It says, Address type assigned by DHCP. Since you have disabled your DHCP Broadcast Flag, that might be a concern. Since the Vista PC works at the Internet Shop it obviously doesnot affect a "Public" connection, but it might affect the school's network connection. My best advise now would be to talk to the man that originally setup the school's XP network.

Great. Here's the image. So should we re-enable the DHCP broadcast flag?
I'll prepare some material to bring to the computer guy in town. I'll let you know what he says. Thanks again! |

The Details didn't tell me what I wanted to see.
Let's wait to see what your local tech says before changing anything. Good Luck...
