Hi all, Am having some problems with my computer.
I recently installed a netgear WPN311 wireless pci card, got all the vista driver/updates etc off the netgear site. Havent had any problems with it untill today where it said "wlancfg5 Unsupported operation was attempted" upon start up. Not only that but the boot of the computer now takes ages, a few minutes longer than usual.
So i found out the wlancfg5 is a program for the wpn311, and thought i dont need it because windows can control the wireless device settings. This is where the problems started:
- The uninstall for some reason doesnt complete and just stops responding.
- Windows explorer started to then act funny and started to not show anything/crash/not respond (for example if i right click the recycle bin it takes a min or two for the options to come up. Plus my folders in 'Ben' dont show using the shortcut via start menu, but do if i go via My computer/users/ben.
- Added to that the computer in general is slow although the internet is fine.
So wanted to do a system restore to see if that helped things but my system restore doesnt load. It says in my task manager that process rstrui.exe (system restore) is running but its not. Update: after a while a window comes up saying "There was an unexpected error. Parameter is incorrect (0x80070057) System restore will now close." and the process rstrui.exe closes too.
So could there be a virus running? Thought that was a common reason system restore wouldn't load? I've run an up-to-date AVG virus check with no problems found.
Any help guys?
Cheers
Ben

Could be some damaged files, try to repair Vista.
How to? Put Vistadisc in your PC, then: (according to Gandalf) ''you need to go to the Start>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt Right click on the Command Prompt and click on "Run as administrator", then you can enter sfc /scannow NOTE: There is a space between the "c" and the "/".'' Robin

Thanks for the reply, I found my vista disk after digging and my computer was from dell so its got dell written all over it. But i assume it'll work in the same way as if i bought a disk from windows?
I've put it in and its given me the option to "upgrade" ie- repair current installation. Should i do this via the disk or should i go into the command prompt? Cheers, Ben |

I started to do the repair via the disk but it mentioned several hours and with system restore not working didnt fancy it...
I did what you mentioned above and the command prompt said the following: Verification 99% complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log I have attached the CBS log if its any help in diagnosing the problem? Looks way too complicated for me to make any sence from it - actually just tried to attach it but its 17Mb The whole computer is slow now, for example when i right clicked on command prompt to open it as administrator it took a few mins to come up with the options. And when i browsed to attach the log file it takes ages for any files to show in the explorer. Anyone got any idea? Thanks, Ben Last edited by Bmorgan; 07-22-2007 at 10:02 PM. |
