CCleaner is a great prog that I always download after a fresh install of XP. However, I wouldn't recommend using it for your Registry cleaning. Get a specalised registry cleaner for that task.

Default Not a waste

Thanks spaceman for showing me I'm not waisting my time. I was doing this for the past year and started thinking maybe I'm waisting my time, but seeing someone else post the same thing sure makes me feel better.

Cool Here's a few more tips!!!

I too salute to CCleaner. After a clean, and a reboot, defrag, my lappy runs as smooth as butter. Another healthy alternative is Pc Doc Pro.

I occasionally every few weeks make a BACKUP of my registry. If your like me, and play with your registry, or just someone trying a few registry hacks, and not too confident....backing up is the way to go.

I also think that microsoft should scrap their default defrag program, and come up with something thats more efficient. I myself use PerfectDisk to defrag my hard drive once a fortnight.

Be good to your PC, and your PC will be good to you.

Cool Not a waste of time no more!

I'm actually quite surprised by the amount of people who do LOOK after their PC. I've been doing a lot of the things mentioned here for quite a long time, and i'm the only person in my group of friends who hasn't resorted to doing a reinstall or fresh install for the past 2 years...not once!!

BTW, Tuneup Utilities 2007 is now available.

This is a great little site which will get rid of all those nasty infections. Bookmark it and you will always go back.

For computer maintenance I also recommend a great utility called TuneUp Utilities 2006. It's not completely free, as you have a 30 day trial. But its great to use within that time, and you could buy it if you want (Worth the money) It does everything, and I mean everything.

I also use CCleaner , Ad-Aware, And Mcafee internet security suite.

I do have one question and that is, do you think I should use any other software apart from just Mcafee to protect myself? Or is the security suite good enough on its own?
In answer to your question, Mcafee in my mind, surpasses them all when it comes to anti-virus protection, however the firewall functionality in the suite is a bit of a let down. I personally use Trend Micro Pc-cillin Internet Security Suite 2007, and I highly recommend it to anyone. Easy to configure, minimal obstruction (no constant popups of messages and alerts), and very powerful.

However, another alternative (My previous configuration before migrating to Trend Micro)...disabling the firewall feature in Mcafee, and using ISS BlackIce Defender as my personal firewall.
