Default System Properties panel

A nice and simple but yuseful for finding info out!!!

System Properties: General, Computer Name & Hardware
EXPLAINED...

Find your way around the first three tabs of the “main” Control Panel

How to find it...
Start/Control Panel/System

1. General Tab
The General tab gives you the information about the PC and is described in the main article.

2. Computer Name
The Computer Name tab allows you to set the name and description for your PC. If your PC isn’t on a network, this isn’t very important, but if you are, then this will be the name that identifies the PC. You can change the description in the text box, but to change the computer’s name or the Workgroup it belongs to, you need to click on the Change button. If you want several computers to be able to swap files on a home network, it is best to make sure that they all use the exact same Workgroup name and have unique computer names. Home users can ignore the Network ID button. It opens a wizard, but if you want to create a home network there are better ways.

3. Device Manager
Clicking on the device manager tab will open the Device Manager which is dealt with here.

4. Driver Signing
Microsoft runs a certification programme that checks drivers (bits of software that makes your hardware work) function correctly with Windows. Not all drivers are certificated in this manner. This button allows you to decide how Windows will deal with certified and non-certified drivers.

5. Windows Update
This determines if and how Windows will search Microsoft’s Windows Update site for drivers for any new hardware that you connect.

6. Hardware Profiles
You can create different Hardware Profiles and then enable/disable bits of hardware in different profiles. The profile to use can be selected from a menu when you start the PC up.
