Default Norton Ghost and our Web Server...

Hello All. We have an old (5+ years) web server at work that has a partitioned 18GB drive in it. We would like to ghost the image of the OS and installed software and move it over to a new, much larger HDD, but I was told from someone that, if you Image a HDD partitioned, the new HDD will take on the exact image, and will show that it only has 18GB...after some thought, this does make total sense. Now I'm at home, and I'm thinking to myself. If I was to use the Partition Utility (western digital), and give it an initial partition of say, 20GB, then the rest (330GB) free, arn't I able to put the image on the new 20GB partition I just created, and still have no problem using the rest of the HDD as needed??? Any other suggestions would be great as well. Thanks

AH!! I just read symantecs website. I guess Ghost isn't even supported on a servers OS's anyway.... So then using the Windows Backup Utility and backing everything up, then porting it over onto the new HDD with Server 03 is all the options we have?? Shoot, I don't even think this box will support 03!! OK, suggestions please.

To me the problem your going to have is when/if you try to image it on to a new hdd, the hdd will look at it's new home, not recognise the hardware and say "Nope. I'm not playing".
Imaging is ok to back up to the same pc/system/server etc and that's it.

Any suggested softwares, utilities, etc that anyone might know of that can help with the port over to a new HDD?? I would love to say that getting a newer server was in the cards, but its not. I guess just adding a new HDD is our only real option for now.

You say the setup is 5 year plus old so are you running Server 2000?
I'm unsure of the EULA with regard to re-installing it on a new system, MS may allow you but they may also say you need to buy a new copy.

Yes easiest thing to do would probably be to buy a new hard drive that is of curse that’s if you have space in the server to fit an anther hard drive.
