Default Windows 2000 login dilemna

Hello. My sister's company was going out of business & I bought a computer from them for my son. It is a Compaq Deskpro, Pentium 3 processor, 800 Mhz, running Windows 2000 Pro. I just got the CPU & some cables, no software discs. Plugged everything in & after bootup, it's asking for Userid, Password, & what network I want to log on to.
Been searching net for solution & most I've seen say change password. But that's only after I get into Windows in the first place. Was wondering if I got on of those 'Password Reset CDs', would that enable me to then access the computer? Also, if the computer was in a company on a network, will it work now that it's a standalone in my house? or will I have to do something else before my son will be able to use? Thanks in advance for any help/advice anyone might be able to offer.

Hi lmarie,

Welcome to PC Help Forum!

Let me answer your second question first. Regarding being on a network, yes it will work as a standalone. It will be assigned to the companies domain, so just change it to 'WORKGROUP'.

As for your log in trouble, have you spoken to your sister, to see if she has the password? You could try Administrator/administrator and password/PASSWORD/P@55w0rd. As for a 'reset CD', depending on how good it is, yes, you should be able to use that.

Ok..thanks. I had already asked her about a password or if she could contact the IT guy, but the answer was no.

I will get one of those reset disks & try that. I'll let u know what happens.

Hi Imarie, there is a piece of software you can try called CIA Commander

I've used this software before and it successfully removed the password of any user account on the computer.
