Default Connection issues, Sporatic slowness with no apparent cause...

This is a copy of my message on another forum...just thought I would try here as well, since the other place doesn't seem too terribly active.

Since my last Windows reinstall, I've been having semi-serious issues with the speed of my network connection. Or, rather, the responsiveness if it.

Every 5-30 minutes, the connection becomes non-responsive. I can see packets going out (or at least, Windows thinks it's transmitting them), but they don't seem to make it to my ISP until there has been quite a few retries. Almost everything going through the connection ceases to work. Web browsing becomes nearly impossible, IMing doesn't work properly, games don't want to work. Intrestingly, the console Ping command is still able to echo a remote server (I use Google for that purpose) with normal latency, even while nothing else seems to be getting through. An episode can last anywhere from thirty seconds to five minutes. I can't find anything wrong with my computer; after combing my services list and startup entries, checking the processes I have running, and trying three different network adapters (I've always thought onboard equipment to be somewhat frail, so I actually did that last one first), I'm at a complete loss as to what the problem is.

It isn't my ISP, since the two other computers on my network are able to connect just fine. If it helps any, MSN seems to worsen the problem. AIM doesn't seem to affect it at all.

Any help would be appreciated. Networking isn't my strong point, so I have no idea :P

Hello there and welcome to the forums Septfox.
  • First things first are you using any sort of P2P software on any of those machines e.g Limewire, Bittorrent
  • Do you have any antivirus software installed, if so what is it?
Could you click on 'Prework' in my signature and follow the instructions in there and post the appropriate logs for Hijackthis and Ewido, you may have some sort of spyware on your system.

Thank you for the welcome, Zimbo.

Actually yes, I do have Limewire installed (use it to get Jpop music, since I really can't buy it here in the US ^.^'). But I have had it through several reinstalls, and it never caused any problems. Our ISP has good quality equipment, maintaining normal latency even with every bit of bandwidth utilized. I could surf and play games while downloading at 60-70kb/s (max speed for my connection). Now, if I have Limewire on, nothing else at all is able to get through. Same with normal downloading. Of note is the fact that, even though *I* can't do anything while downloading/running Limewire, the other computers on my network can do most anything perfectly.

Antivirus is AVG Free Edition, fully updated. Come to think of it, that's about the only thing different...I recently switched from Kaspersky to AVG on request by my ISP during the last reinstall. Maybe it's causing some kind of problem? Though I didn't think antivirus directly influenced the connection...which would be ZoneAlarm's job.

I got a HijackThis! log a couple of days ago, looks normal to me:

I somehow think tracking cookies wouldn't cause this problem....

I'll do a full scan with Ewido when I get back (have to return to work now).

Hya Septfox.

I dont see anything wrong sofar , but did you already had MessengerPlus! 3 installed before the problems begone? That comes often with a Lop infection but i dont see any evidence of that in youre logs.

And do you actually use MessengerPlus! 3?

'lo, Joe.

I use MSN itself, but the only feature of the Plus! package I use is the text color support for screen names...which is automatic. Beside that, all I do with it is what it was made to do: send messages to friends :P

I keep a close eye on my running processes, so even if I *do* manage to catch something, I can kill it off before it does anything. It's been several years since I was hit with a virus, and that one wasn't even destructive.

Malware/viruses aside, perhaps some obscure registry entry is the problem? Just an 'Oopsie!' by Windows itself (which seems to happen often to me -_-)? As I said, networking isn't my forte, so I wouldn't even know which sections of the registry to muck around in. Can't really think of a function that would cause this anyway, unless something is conflicting with another setting of some type. I'll look around a bit.

Thanks for your continued help!

Maybe your ISP has changed certain things, all I know is that P2P software does cause PC's to run extremely slow and chews your bandwidth. Its possible that Limewire updated and this new update could be causing the issue.

If you don't use limewire do you have any problems with your connection or your computer?
