Default Dell PowerEdge 1500sc rebooting

This server reboots and goes to the blue screen of death.
I have 2, 40 gig HDs mirrored on a scsi backplane 1gig of memory.
Dell diags showed 1 HD bad. I ordered a new 147 HD and istalled it and rebuild the drive
same error
I took out all but te new drive and it still kept rebooting intermitantly ..I was able to partition it and format it and statr loading the Operating System [small business server 2000] but it rebooted many times as i did this.
I then ran the diags again and no errors and it did not reboot while I was in diags.
I unplugged the tape drive
will Dell tech support I removed the scsi controller cards from the computer and plugged the scsi backplan directly into the MB.
It still rebooted ...now it not even getting to the blue srceen of death. I am trying to boot from the server 2000 cd and when it gets to press any key to boot from cd" it freezes or reboots before that.
without the cd in it stops at NTLDR is missing error, when it doesnt reboot before that.
Also I noticed there is not much lcd action on the new hard drive...so now I think it is the power supply or the memoryor MB...any idesa how to troubleshoot this further.

The plan is to get a new dell server..[they hadnt yet because of budget]but that will take 1 1/2 weks to deliver and I need to get some temp fix to get the network running and its 10 users at this non-profit.

I took the scsi card and put it in my xp computer , it intalled but I cant plug in the HD because there is a backplane connection on it.....any ideas about an enclosure or something to get it off the scsi and on the eide or sata so i can at least get the data.
I need to decide tomorrow if I should give up fixing it and wait for a new server.
The part number of the power supply is 5g022 it is 350 watt and I dont think it is standard.. but i couldnt find it on dell. And dell parts are closed on weekends.
My first step tomorrow is replacing the memory I have 2 PC133 sdrams but 1 says cl2 and one says cl3 it that OK. I need to have 2 128 mb in the first 2 slots I think.
It currently has 1 gig.
we do have backups on tape...but it is also an internal scsi, and cant access it.

thanks in advanced for your help.

Jan

Hi cyberjan,

Can you tell us what the stop error code is on the server when it blue screens?
This will help me identify what the error is, and will point almost immediately at the problem.

Due to the robust nature of Windows Server OS...a Blue Screens of Death is almost always going to be hardware related.

funny thing , I had 2 blue screens of death in the same day, same network ....I can check tomorrow but I think this is the one that was on the server. But a desktop went down too...maybe related? Bad hard drive. the dell server and desktops were all purchased together ..it seems that that both hard drives failed on the same day ...5 years and 9 months after buying!

Could it be something as simple as the fan malfuntioning and shutting down the server? or bad memory?

Update ...i ordered a new poweredge 840 ...so this would serve as a backup server if it can be brought back from the dead...
thanks for your help.

Yup, that'd be good - do you mean "backup server incase this new one dies?"
or "backup server to run backups and nothing else"?

i've got a couple of clients with pure backup servers...and that is the best thing..."need to restart...click"...no interfering with the office work

That stop error just indicates that you'll need to reinstall windows when you can...however you're having trouble doing that.
I'd suggest doing a memtest (Memtest86.com - Memory Diagnostic) and seeing if the server has bad memory.

The memory was fine...so i believe it is the mo board..and ordered a new server. Now the problem is:
1.Reloading sb server 2000 and
2. getting the data off the HD s or tape back up.
I asked dell if there was a cassie that I could plug the scsi HDs into with a firewire or usb attachment...do you know of any?

3>
The tape drive is also scsi...I have a scsi controller card that installed on my xp computer, but it soesnt see the quantum dlt vs80 tape drive.
Also, I called veritas to see what kind of support I could get and they charge $80 per incident!

thanks
Jan

Update
I can see the tape drive in my xp computer so I am going to try to restore the info and try to burn it on a dvd. One problem is ..I have 2 versions of veritas that came with the original tape drive and the new tape drive I bought this year.. I continued to use the original version, now i cant seem to find the installation disks. I can download a free trial..should i do that or contnue to look for the disks?

Good work cyberjan!

Let me know how you go...to be honest, i don't think you old server will be much use after all this, but we can certainly help you out and attempt to bring it back to life

Do you know if it has a RiLO card?
(remote card that can be accessed even when the server is switched off)

Update..after checking everything i could I think it is a power supply problem...Only thing is Dell doesnt make them anymore and there is none when I searched, spare parts, ebay etc. I did find an upgrade kit in canada that converts the power supply type to a redundant PS. I am waiting for it to be mailed to me.
