You might have got some warning if your BIOS has/had S.M.A.R.T enabled.
I have known hdd's die overnight, just like that.

yikes
I typed this in
cd\windows\system32\config
and got
The command is not recognized Type Help for a list of supported commands.

That site was just the first in a google for SMART, have a look in your BIOS to see if it supports it.
