I've seen this happen when an application had been installed and then un-installed without restarting. When this happens, the last bit of installation never takes place during restart, since there are no files to complete the install. Therefore, you end up with this error message over an over again!

Could this be the cause to your problems?

oo...posibly. at the time i couldnt use my pc due to "files deleted" so i booted in safe mode, whilst ther i carried out a broadband instalation but once my pc restarted i 4got to do b'band an used my server 2003 disc to repiar my system.....after it had replaced the files an fixed my pc i did the rest of the b'band instalation in normal windows but it ddnt completly finish installin....at the last screen it needs to use the internet but says it cant connect...it suggests my internet settings but this makes no difrence. despite this my internet and browser works fine but my system is runnin very poor without disc 2(no security, no firewalls, constant lagg and no anti-virus)

The 2003 disk 2 should really have been used straight after disk 1, before any additional software.

OK

One thing you could try is to uninstall, reboot, reinstall, reboot the software that would be causing the problem.

If you know how to use the registry, you can also have a look at the following registry key. (WARNING! Any changes you make to the registry using Registry Editor are permanent, there is no “undo” button, so be very careful what you do.)

- Go to Start, Run
- Type in regedit
- Find the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Upda teExeVolatile

Value in RegEditMeaning
0x00000000 (0)No pending restart.
0x00000001 (1)A software update removal is pending a restart.
0x00000002 (2)A software update installation is pending a restart.
0x00000003 (3)Both an installation and a removal are pending a restart.

If the entry is not set to 0, then try setting it to 0 and then reboot.
