Question internet explorer crash

My son just got an hp computer from one of his teachers. He also gave him a windows 2000 professional cd so he could reinstall the software. I ran windows update. But when I try to open internet explorer, it immediately crashes every time. I can't even stay on long enough to come here and write this post from the other pc. Thats why I am writing it here. Before the reinstallation, the computer had 256 colors. But afterwards, it only has 16 colors. Could this cause IE to constantly crash upon opening. In device manager, there is a yellow question mark under other devices ---video controller (vga compatible) and I don't see monitor or display adapter in the device manager at all. Can you please help me? Did I reinstall it wrong. I'm not sure what to tell you about the pc. Its an HP Pentium III. In system properties--- x86 Family6 Model8 Stepping6 AT/AT compatible 260,592 RAM.
Thanks
Fay

Hi and welcome.

Can you give us the full model number of the PC - it looks like you're missing some important system drivers.

Does it also say anything behind that? Or maybe on a sticker on the pc itself somewhere? I.e: HP Vectra 486N , HP Vectra 386/16N ect ect.
