Default System will not boot from disk

About a week ago I received an error on startup that said:
Registry File Failure:
The Registry cannot load the hive (file):
SystemRoot/SYSTEM32/Config/Software
Or log its alternative
It is corrupt, absent or not writable

After much research I found out all I have to do is load the 2000 Pro OS disk and use the Recovery console. I put in the CD and the drive doesn't even read the disk. I have no idea what to do. I checked the boot order and the CD Rom is the first one. Anyone know how I can get the drive to boot? Thanks!!

Hi there, and welcome to the forums.

When you insert the cd, does the light flash as if it's trying to read it?

And does it give you an option "Press any key to boot from CD . . ."

The light flashes, but acts as if nothing is in the drive. There is no option to boot from the CD. I went into the bios to try to see if there was an option in there to boot from CD and also in the Advanced startup options...

Oh yeah, and before this I downloaded a chkreg disc and the drive didn't read it either. Sorry, I forgot to mention that.

Hmmm....
perhaps the CD is a bit messed up? Is there another CD you can try to boot from? Even another version of windows for now, just to test.

I tried another CD of 2000 Pro, but it still didn't read it. I'm going to try converting the CD onto Floppies and see if it will work that way.
