I am trying to load windows 98 on a new hard drive that is larger than the old hard drive that was in my computer. it starts the setup cycle and then stops and reads "Windows Setup requires 7340032 bytes a". What is wrong? do I have the hard drive setup right? Is there something I can do to go around this?

Hi, Nat, welcome to PCHF.
We need to check to see if BIOS is detecting your hard drive correctly. By doing this, have the hard drive properly installed with the correct jumper settings. Make sure the ide cable and power cable are properly pluged in and secure. Start the system, and during the boot up process, if you look closely down at the bottom of your screen you will see a indication stating to press a key to enter into set up. this key is usually DEL. Once into bios, go to the first category, and see if the hard drive is there. You can get its size information by pressing enter on that particular device.

I have went into the BIOS and it shows that I have a hard drive that is on auto detect and has a capacity of 320GB. When I try to load the windows 98 cd it states that "Windows Setup requires 7340032 bytes available on". There has been times that it does not spell all of available in the sentence instead it will leave just a a or av.

If it's Win 98Se and if I recollect correctly it can't see partitions above 128GB unless you have other software in place.
Re-install with three partitions, say 128, 128, 94 Others who may know better please jump in..... Please report back

if i can recall , i think that 98 and ME only can read 120gb or like elpmek said 128gb, i think xp was like that too at first , before the sp1 update. So yes you would have to partition the drive into 2 or 3 partitions . hope that helps
