have a win 98 and will start to boot but fails will not even let me into safe mode tried wipeing out system and starting a new but will not run cd rom at boot whith disk in drive and suggestions.

Do you have Windows 98 Boot floppy disc? You need to boot off that first - format your hard drive, then install Windows 98. If you don't have a Win98 Boot disc you can download it from the link and copy the files to a floppy.

Download the Win98 OEM or Win98se OEM depending on what version you have.

After you have booted to the Boot disk.

at the prompt type: format c: /s
You will be prompted if you want format the drive and that you will lose all data, etc. Press Y.
After format has finished, reboot.
Change drive to your CD drive - make sure you have Win98 inserted.
To do this at the prompt type: E:
Press Enter
Your CD drive may have a different letter.
Type: CD WIN98, press ENTER
Type: setup, Press ENTER

It should now start installing Windows 98.
