Default msn msgr problem

I'm using an old OS..win98..I had msn msgr 7.0 and it kept causing the computer to shut down and (blue screen)...I tried to uninstall through settings but it kept telling me i needed a cdrom etc., I then went online and tried to download older versions from 6.0 through 7.5 the 6.0 through 7.0 kept saying I had a newer version installed..but I still could not uninstall through settings (add/remove)...when I tried 7.5 and above of course it told me I needed xp or higher...is there a solution?

Try removing MSN first by doing this:

First, make sure you have exited MSN messenger and unsinstalled any MSN Messenger related entry from Control Panel (START — > CONTROL PANEL — > ADD OR REMOVE PROGRAMS). Then, START — > RUN the following command:
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove

Then, try installing an older version from here: OldVersion.com

port44 agrees: You can close the question, think I'll just do without Msn Msgr. Thanks

Hi Hengis, I tried whatyou suggested and received this error msg. Error in advpack
missing entry:dll, launchINFsection. Also when I try to remove msn 7.0 in add/remove it says the feature i am trying to use is on cd-rom or other removable disk that is not available and instructs to insert msnmsgr7.0 disk.
