I am having great difficulty with this ancient machine. There are files on this hard drive that I need to retrieve. Any help anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. This computer would not boot at all and was missing several win386 files. I had a win98 install cd and put it in the drive in the hopes that i may be able to pull the files I needed for startup off of the cd. It gave me no restore options and would only do a fresh install. I cancelled the install because I did not want to overwrite any existing information on the hard drive.Apparently, I made matters worse because i believe the install cd cleared the caches and now my cd drive does not work. When trying to start up, I get an error message that states configmg windows protection error... you must restart your computer. Can anyone help me out and tell me what I need to do to get windows running, and get the files I need off this computer so I can throw it the hell out? please help if you can!!!!

You may be able to sort this problem out through safe mode. Start your PC by pressing F8 until you receive the startup option screen, and then select safe mode from there.
