Default SU Reg XMS Cache Error Scanreg?

Hello,
Can somebody please help me.I am running Windows ME and i went to start up my computer this morning and it went to a start up menu that read:
1. Normal
2. logged (/BOOTLOG.TXT)
3. Safe Mode
4. Step By Step Confirmation

Warning: Windows has detected a registry/configuration error.
Use SCANREG to fix this error.

I have tried each option and nothing works. When i tried safe mode it went to a grey screen with the words "safe mode" in each corner of the screen with nothing on it.
When i tried Normal Mode, It said "Registry File was not found. Registry services may not be operative for this session.
XMS Cache problem. Registry services may not be operative this session."

How do I fix this without losing my important files on my harddrive...

Welcome to the PCHF duttyroo.

Unfortunately there is no way around this - we need to reformat the drive to get you back up and running.
However, if you have a friend with a computer, you can plug in your hard drive to his computer (next to his) and copy the files that you want to keep.

Windows ME is fairly old, and it is the worst OS from Microsoft ever created (some people say Vista is, but they don't what they're talking about )

Worst case scenario - you can take your computer into a shop and they'll be able to fix you right up, as long as there's no physical damage to the hard drive.
