Exclamation [Answered] Win98, Second Edition?

Hey all,

Well first off, I recently received a Compaq Presario 1800T

The Certificate of Authenticity on the back shows: Microsoft Windows 98, Second Edition
When I first turn it on, I get a screen that says:
"Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu"
-1. Start PDWIPE Utility
Enter a choice:1

"F5=Safe mode Shift+F5=Command Prompt Shift+F8=Step by step confirmation[NO]

I did not know that there was a cd loaded in the laptop!!
So it actually just wiped something out...assuming it wiped the hard drive clean?? not sure
but when i took it out, and powered up once more...I get "Operating System not Found"

What do I do?
I wanna somehow get this running again with a new Operating system

Hiya, PDWIPE is indeed a hard drive wiping utility, so that would explain the OS not found, if you can get hold of a Windows 98 cd you will be able to install it onto the laptop and use the serial number from the COA to register it.

Operating system not found could mean the hard drive is broken.
Open up computer and check all cables are connected correctly and secure.
Or if you have the windows 98 install floppys and cd then maybe you could reinstall 98.

Oh cool
Yeah, I was wondering if there was a way to just download the OS?
Maybe? From Floppy?

Nope cannot download it.
If the computer is upgradeable and is xp compatable then I would install a version of XP.

But you need to check your hard drive is not broken or you will need to buy a new one.

I have a pentium 3 computer upgraded and has XP Pro in it and runs well so maybe a change a fresh install of XP?
