Default Help booting a very old computer

Hi,
There is one file I want off my old old old old computer. It's a 33mhz 486 (I think) I don't know if it's running w95 or 98. Either way it won't boot up.

I get a "System configuration was invalid. Review all configuration settings." error.

But, I have no idea what the settings should be! Anyone out there able to walk me through it?? Or at least get to the files on the hard drive?

Thank you VERY much!

Darrenjon

Hey there and welcome to PCHF,

If I were you I would just take the HD out of the computer, and stick it in another one and then just copy the files off of it

It's very easy to do, just set the jumper to Slave and connect it to the IDE & Power cables

Sounds like all that other computer needs is to replace the CMOS battery.
There is a little battery (CR2032) that normally can be replaced with ease that holds the info about the computer in the CMOS when the system is off. I would replace to the CMOS battery first, then enter Setup and check out everything and make sure it all looks correct. You will need to set the date and time anyhow.

most 486 batteries are soldered to the mainboard but they do have 3 pins on the mainboard for a replacement to be attached to. You can get an external or a solder on replacement from here CMOS Battery
