Default JAVA Havoc

JAVA is playing havoc on my one of my Win98SE machines. AMD Athlon 800 MHZ CPU, 512MB Ram, 80GB IDE Seagate Hard Drive
When I go to Control Panel and click on the JAVA icon I get an invalid page fault and it needs to be closed. When I go to java.com to test my installation Firefox gives me an invalid page fault both are in an unknown module. After these errors it makes my system unstable and I have to reboot.
Anyone know what I could try?
I do have J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 and J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7 listed in Add/Remove Programs applet.Should I try and remove those and then reinstall?

Wow...win98se...
First thing would be to reinstall (or try it), second would be to downgrade to an older version...
Failing that...look at upgrading windows?

First thing would be to reinstall (or try it),
So removing the J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 6 and J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7 would be your first suggestion? Then reinstall?

second would be to downgrade to an older version
Just remove J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0 Update 7?

Failing that...look at upgrading windows?
I have 7 computers. 4 with Win98SE, 1 XP Home , 1 XP Pro and 1 Vista.
I have these variety of systems because I have phone support, I can boot one of the systems up and navigate with the user , makes it easy on me and them
So upgrading is not an option for this particular pc.
